How to Clean Your Grill After Summer

If you’ve done much grilling over the summer, chances are your grill could use a good cleaning. Cooking on a dirty grill isn’t just unappealing, it’s also a safety hazard. Grease and bits of food built up on the grill can cause fires and negatively impact the taste of your food.

Whether or not you plan to continue grilling past the summer season, once the weather cools down it’s a good idea to take some time to clean off your grill. You’ll need to start by opening up your grill and pulling it apart.

Be sure the grill is cooled off and then open the hood and remove the grill gates. If your grill has heat diffusers over the burners be sure to take those out. You can use an old spatula or cheap putty knife to scrape the sides of the grill’s interior, sometimes called the grill box. Be sure to remove as much grease and as many food particles as possible.

If you have a gas grill, you’ll want to clean out the burner tubes with a steel wire or nylon brush. Brush from the center outward and clean sideways as opposed to up and down. Now you can reassemble the grill. You’ll want to turn it on and set it at the highest temperature and then close the hood. Some grills have a cleaning setting you can take advantage of.

After a few minutes, you’ll want to use a metal grill brush without bristles to scrape the grates. If you need to use a nylon brush be sure the grill is cold first. Now your grill is cleaned off and ready to go. You may want to change your habits slightly in order to prevent future buildup of grease and food particles.

You can try greasing the grates with a small amount of cooking oil just before cooking. Some people swear by using a raw onion on the grates before you start to grill. Use a grill brush without bristles to scrape the hot grates before and after you grill.
